The Rocking R Reserve is a 90-acre parcel in western Yolo County, California, dedicated to restoring and promoting native grasslands, forbs, and pollinators; connecting people with the land; and contributing toward a sustainable Earth.

People are an important part of the Reserve. Walking the labyrinth, seated in a circle overlooking grass-covered hills, or meeting around a table in the Tack Room or Tank House, people bring their dreams and ideas for creating a better organization, a new direction for living, or critical practices for a sustainable Earth.

Over the next 5 years, landowners Judy and Tom Scott will establish rich riparian habitat on both sides of the Clover Canal, the irrigation channel that flows through the Reserve. The Canal is managed by the Yolo County Flood Control & Water Conservation District, and we are working with them to develop a conservation plan that benefits both the Water District and the Rocking R Reserve.

Other partners, like the NRCS and Hedgerow Farms, will guide and assist us, and soon the Rocking R will transform from a fallow pasture into a vital habitat and space for the flourishing of plants, animals, and people. The plan includes:

  • Planting the pasture in native grasses
  • Planting hedgerows along the Clover Canal
  • Interplanting native forbs
  • Installing bat and pollinator boxes
  • Using solar energy for pump station
  • Developing walking paths, including a labyrinth for personal reflection

The Main House

Adjacent to the Reserve are the original home and outbuildings of the George and Dorothy Rominger sheep ranch, The Rocking R. Established in the early 1940's, the ranch includes a brick farmhouse, three steel barns with redwood timbers, two windmills, a 3-story tank house, a shop, tack room, and smoke house.

You will be struck by the beauty and utility of these buildings and the wild and spectacular landscape that surrounds them. Come and experience it!
